Wilhelm Mülhens originally sold his scented water, Aqua Mirabilis, for medicinal use. During the Napoleonic period, requirements to disclose medicinal formulas led him to market it as Eau de Cologne. The name 4711 came from his premises on Cologne’s Glockengasse. Citrus notes, rosemary and rose give the fragrance its fresh, aromatic character.
