Gabrielle Chanel and perfumer Ernest Beaux introduced Chanel No. 5 in 1921. Aldehydes, ylang-ylang and neroli brighten the opening before jasmine, May rose, iris and lily of the valley move into a warm base of sandalwood, vetiver, musk, vanilla, civet and oakmoss. Chanel helped create early demand by scenting her fitting rooms and sharing bottles with favored clients before wider sale.
This sealed circa-1970s 14 ml Parfum Extrait bottle has never been opened and contains the original formulation.
