Arpège was created for Lanvin in 1927 by perfumers André Fraysse and Paul Vacher, and named by Jeanne Lanvin as a gift for her daughter Marie-Blanche on her thirtieth birthday. The name — French for arpeggio — reflects the musical layering of the composition, and the iconic black sphere bottle with its gold bas-relief of mother and daughter remains one of the most recognizable in fragrance history.
Fraysse and Vacher built the fragrance around a peach-led floral accord enriched by ambrein, the primary aromatic molecule of ambergris, giving Arpège its characteristic warmth and sensuality. The opening is bright and luminous — bergamot, neroli, and aldehydes with a soft peach sweetness. The floral heart is lush and complex, and the base settles into sandalwood, vetiver, and musk grounded by the intimate warmth of ambrein.
