When Yves Saint Laurent launched Opium in France in 1977, its lavishly spiced floral character stood apart from the lighter greens then in fashion. Jean-Louis Sieuzac completed the composition at Roure, where a team of perfumers developed its contrast of bright spice, flowers and a deep oriental base. Its name and dramatic presentation made the launch a defining moment in late-1970s perfumery.
