Perfumer Yuri Gutsatz first developed Variations around 1950, and Carven reformulated and released it publicly in 1971. The green floral oriental chypre moves from aldehydes, pineapple, galbanum and blackcurrant into narcissus, iris, jasmine, rose, carnation and ylang-ylang, then settles over cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, oakmoss, leather and labdanum. The line later let wearers personalize the base scent with companion essences.
